As a reminder of her native country, she planted an apple tree in the Garden from her Canadian Home. To this day, the tree continues to grow near the patio, reminding guests of the Candlewyck House’s rich history. Her new farm home covered several blocks on the highest point in Pentwater Village. In the early days, the farm supplied vegetables to the village, at times trading some of the crops with local Native American Indians in exchange for baskets. As the village grew, the fields were sold off for home construction. In the late 1890's, a minister of the Pentwater Church of God purchased the house. He added the downstairs bedroom and bath, the first indoor bathroom in Pentwater. During the Great Depression, Miss Harriet Kylander inherited the property from her sister, Mrs. John Klett, and rented rooms to summer visitors. During the winter, she traveled the world as a buyer for Macy's Department Store in New York City. Phil and Shirley Rohrbough raised their two sons here in the 1960's and 1970's. They enlarged and remodeled the kitchen, the first remodeling since additions were made in 1892. John and Mary Jo Neidow purchased
the house in March 1989, and opened it to guest again in October that
year after restoring its original character.
